NIRAA: Redefining Periods, Redefining Power

By- Shubha Gupta, founder of NIRAA by SDG

For centuries, periods have been defined in whispers—taboos, restrictions, and myths shaping how women see themselves. A natural biological process was transformed into a symbol of impurity, shame, or weakness. But what if we flipped this narrative? What if periods were not a limitation, but a source of strength and resilience?

At NIRAA, we believe it’s time to redefine periods—and in doing so, redefine power.

  1. Periods Are Not a Pause Button

For too long, women have been told that their productivity dips, their abilities weaken, or their opportunities shrink during “those days.” The truth? Women have built companies, run households, led countries, and broken records—all while managing their cycles.

Periods don’t pause women’s power—they showcase it. The ability to endure, adapt, and thrive despite discomfort is not weakness, it’s resilience.

  1. Power Lies in Dignity

A pad is not just a product—it’s dignity in her hand. When a girl has access to safe, comfortable menstrual products, she stays in school. When a woman feels secure during her cycle, she walks into a boardroom with confidence. Menstrual dignity translates directly into educational opportunity, workplace participation, and societal contribution.

Redefining periods means acknowledging this dignity, and ensuring it is accessible to every woman—urban or rural, affluent or marginalized.

  1. Power Lies in Breaking Silence

The greatest barrier to menstrual wellness is not biology—it’s silence. When we don’t talk about cramps, irregularities, or hygiene, we allow misinformation and stigma to thrive.

Redefining periods means opening conversations—between mothers and daughters, teachers and students, men and women. A society that talks openly about menstruation is a society that respects women.

  1. Power Lies in Choice & Innovation

Today, women want more than just “basic hygiene.” They want solutions that are comfortable, sustainable, affordable, and respectful of their lifestyle. At NIRAA, our focus has been on designing products that empower women’s choices—because real power lies in giving women the right to decide what works best for them.

Redefining Power, Together

Redefining periods is not just about redefining women’s relationship with their bodies—it’s about reshaping how society views womanhood itself. When we honor periods, we honor resilience. When we normalize periods, we normalize dignity. When we innovate for periods, we innovate for progress.

At NIRAA, we are not just building pads—we are building a movement. A movement where periods are not hidden, but honored. Not a burden, but a badge of resilience. Not a taboo, but a truth.

And when we redefine periods this way, we don’t just change women’s lives—we redefine power itself.
