LIVE updates on the Balasore railway accident: More than 200 people were murdered and over 900 were injured in a terrible train crash in Odisha’s Balasore on Friday evening at 7 p.m. The Shalimar-Chennai Coromandel Express disaster caused 10 to 12 coaches to collapse into the opposing track. Following that, the Bengaluru-Howrah Superfast Express collided with the derailed coaches, causing three to four of its own coaches to derail. A cargo train was also involved in the incident, adding to the carnage.
Railways Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw said on Saturday that a high-level investigation into the derailment had been ordered. “The accident was unfortunate, and the rescue operation began shortly after the incident was reported to his ministry,” stated the minister, according to ANI. The railway ministry has announced ex-gratia payments of Rs. 10 lakh to the relatives of the deceased, Rs. 2 lakh to those who were seriously injured, and Rs. 50,000 to those who had lesser injuries.
