Lionel Messi will leave Ligue 1 club Paris St. Germain (PSG) at the conclusion of the current campaign, the Ligue 1 club announced on Saturday. Messi was hired by PSG in August 2021 with the goal of winning the Champions League.

After two seasons in the French capital, Leo Messi’s experience with Paris St. Germain will come to an end at the end of the 2022–23 season, PSG host Clermont said during the last round of Ligue 1 on Saturday.

Lionel Messi was congratulated by PSG President Nasser al-Khelaifi for his two seasons of dedication to the team. He added, “I would like to thank Leo Messi for his two seasons in Paris. It has been a delight to see a seven-time Ballon d’Or winner win back-to-back Ligue 1 championships while playing for the Rouge & Bleu and at Parc des Princes.

We wish Leo and his family the very best for the future and cannot overstate his impact to Paris Saint-Germain and Ligue 1. Added Nasser al-Khelaifi

Due to an unapproved travel to Saudi Arabia last month, Messi was suspended by the club. The 35-year-old is required to promote Saudi Arabian tourism as part of a business agreement.

What will Lionel Messi do next?

Reuters reports that the captain of Argentina’s World Cup-winning team has been officially invited to play for Saudi Arabia’s Al-Hilal starting in the upcoming season. Earlier reports from the French publication Foot Mercato indicated that Messi’s father and agent, Jorge Messi, had accepted an exceptional offer from Al-Hilal.

There have been several rumours that Messi would join FC Barcelona, where he spent the most of his playing career. In order to play in Major League Soccer (MLS), the seven-time Ballon d’Or winner could relocate to the United States.
