Kokab Rashid: A Versatile Voice Shaped by Classical Music
Kokab Rashid: A Versatile Voice Shaped by Classical Training and Live Performance
For vocalist Kokab Rashid, music has been a part of life since childhood. With a foundation in Hindustani classical music and experience across different musical formats, his journey has developed through years of training, stage performances, teaching and experimentation.
Kokab belongs to the Delhi Gharana, and his musical education began within his family. His grandfather, Ustad Zafar Ahmed Khan, introduced him to music at an early age. This was followed by training under Khalifa Late Ustad Iqbal Ahmed Khan, while he currently continues his classical training under Ustad Fareed Hasan Khan.
His father, Ustad Rashid Zafar, has also played an important role in his musical development, guiding and teaching him alongside his gurus since childhood.

Kokab’s connection with the stage started early. His first stage performance came when he was approximately six or seven years old. Since then, performing has remained an important part of his musical life.
His repertoire today extends beyond a single genre. While his classical training remains the foundation of his singing, he performs classical, semi-classical, Sufi and Bollywood music, allowing him to work across different types of audiences and musical settings.
This versatility is also reflected in his approach to creating music. Kokab has experimented with contemporary arrangements and rock interpretations of popular songs, using these projects as a way of exploring different musical textures while retaining the understanding developed through classical training.
His professional journey has been complemented by academic education. After completing his B.A. in Music from Hindu College, University of Delhi, he completed his M.A. in Music (Vocal) from the Faculty of Music and Fine Arts, University of Delhi. He is currently pursuing a PhD in Music from the same faculty.
Kokab has also received recognition through the CCRT National Scholarship in the classical category and as the winner of BIG FM’s Big Golden Voice.
Alongside performing, he is involved in music education. He is currently associated with Melody Muse Academy as a Vocal Teacher, where he works with students and focuses on developing their musical foundation through structured and enjoyable learning.
For Kokab, live performance and teaching represent two connected aspects of his musical journey—one focused on expression on stage and the other on helping the next generation develop their own relationship with music.
